How to play Typonauts
Typonauts is a free typing game that runs in your browser. Every word you type correctly pushes a rocket a little further from Earth. On the crew rocket, typists from every country push the same rocket together; on your own rocket, only your words count.
The basics
- Type the highlighted word and press Space (or Enter) to send it.
- Each correct word pushes your rocket one step. A wrong word breaks your streak.
- Your speed is shown as WPM, words per minute, measured over the last 30 seconds. Five characters count as one word, the standard way typing speed is measured.
- Words are everyday English of all lengths, with a few space words mixed in.
Streaks and Hyperdrive
Ten correct words in a row start Hyperdrive: for nine seconds every word pushes twice. Accuracy matters more than raw speed: a steady, clean rhythm beats rushing and making mistakes.
Asteroids
Now and then an asteroid flies at the rocket with a word on it. Type that word to shoot it down for a +3 push. If it reaches you, your streak resets.
The crew rocket and missions
The crew rocket flies in missions. Each mission has a destination, starting with the Moon. When the crew gets there, the mission ends, its top pilots and countries are written into the mission log, and a new mission launches. The busier the crew, the farther the next destination.
Fly for your country
Open the Hangar to choose your flag, a callsign and a paint job. The country board ranks countries by the words their pilots typed in the current mission, so every mission starts a fresh race.
Your own rocket
Switch to My rocket for a personal journey. The route never ends: past the planets and the Heliopause it heads for nearby stars, the Galactic Center and finally Andromeda.
Fair play
Only words typed key by key at a human speed count. Pasting is turned off, and the server limits how fast any pilot can push.
